Owen Developments Press Office & Events
Owens is official F2 turbo supplier
14 October 2009 The inaugural FIA Formula Two race meeting over the weekend of 29th-31st May not only marked the return of a well loved series, it also represented Owen Development’s debut on the starting grid for a major international single seater championship.
That’s because each of the 25 F2 cars uses a specially developed Owen Developments Garrett GT® ball bearing turbocharger, which helps to reliably boost the series’ production based VAG 1.8T 20-valve control engine to power outputs of up to 450bhp.
Owen Development’s experience in motorsport turbocharger design, manufacture and logistics support – allied to its unique technical relationship with Garrett® in the USA – has enabled the Oxfordshire based forced induction specialists to produce a ball bearing unit that provides reliable, responsive performance for the entire F2 grid.
Working in tandem with renowned motorsport power plant specialists Mountune Racing, the end result is a F2 engine that produces 400bhp @ 8250rpm on standard boost, with a 50bhp driver operated temporary overboost facility available. To ensure performance equality, F2 engines are specified to be 1.5% of the target power output, with each power plant using the sophisticated Pi Research Pectel MQ12 engine management system.
Commenting on the F2 project, Lee Owen said “Owen Developments has a long history of motorsport involvement but the opportunity of supplying Garrett GT® turbochargers to the FIA Formula Two series has been very special. Our excellent working relationship with Mountune Racing and the F2 championship technical team has enabled us to develop a ball bearing turbocharger unit that delivers on all the criteria specified. We very much look forward to seeing how this prestigious series develops throughout 2009.” |
